The ATV, or all terrain vehicle, once considered pure recreation and excitement has emerged as much more than that. Years of innovations in the ATV industry have produced superior machines with extraordinary reliability and performance. Aside from enjoying the wooded trails and sand dunes, the ATV has found itself in numerous practical roles including search and rescue, law enforcement, agriculture and farming, snow removal, hunting and patrol of gamelands, and just about any job that requires access to areas previously unreachable by four wheel drive trucks. The four wheel drive (4x4) ATV models in particular have exploded onto the scene.

Anyone who has ever ridden an ATV for recreational purposes knows how gratifying and enjoyable riding can be and it is always interesting to see exciting new roles played by the all terrain vehicle as they continue to emerge year after year. Through the use of new and innovative accessories, larger engines, better suspension and control, we can only imagine where we'll find an ATV next.

There are no laws on the books stating that people of certain sizes need to ride ATV's of certain sizes, but it might be a good idea to get an ATV that matches your body size and is something that you will be able to handle. One example: It wouldn't be smart to put a young 85 pound boy on a 800 or 900cc machine, but rather a 440 to 600cc machine would be an ATV that someone with that type of weight could handle well.

After becoming familiar with your machine comes the fun part, getting out on the trails and practicing. The only way you are going to get better and become experienced with your ATV is by riding it in different situations. Never ride on peoples land without permission from the owner. In the beginning do not get to crazy in your riding style, take it easy and learn the ins and outs of your machine. Always ride with experienced riders, as with any other sport, you will learn from others with more experience. Also no matter how confident you feel on an ATV always ride with someone who is familiar with the trails you will be riding on, in other words never ride alone.

Riding ATV's is a blast and you will quickly find many people to go out with and ride and explore new places. ATV's are steadily becoming more an more popular with no end in sight. Make your riding fun and safe.

While there aren't many differences between a motorcycle helmet and an ATV helmet, there are a few and they may make a big difference. Likewise, there are differences between ATV helmets that are designed for different purposes such as off-roading and racing. ATV helmets generally have more ventilation and cover more of the face. While these features add some extra elements of safety, they add more to comfort which can make a big difference if you spend a lot of time on your ATV. ATV helmets are also generally made to be more secure as ATV riding can be more bumpy and aggressive than other types of vehicles that require helmets.

If you are purchasing a helmet for a child, make sure you choose one that is the right size and have your child try it on for comfort before you buy it. Choosing a helmet that fits correctly and that is DOT certified are the most important factors to consider when purchasing an ATV helmet.
