Outdoor water fountains, usually called garden fountains, appear in various shapes, sizes and materials. You can see rock waterfalls used in landscaping that look like actual rocks with water flowing down. You can also find tiered fountains where water flows from tier to tier or bowl to bowl. This can often be found in the middle of a yard or courtyard.

Garden style fountains are usually made from three materials, namely, fiberglass, stone/granite and ceramic. If you look around, you'll also come across those made from copper to slate to stainless steel. In the article below, we'll differentiate those constructed of fiberglass and cast stone since they are the most common.

Fiberglass outdoor fountains likewise come in several styles. Some lightweight outdoor fountains look like rocks, tiered styles with 1 to 6 levels. Others have Japanese styles and several unique designs, all made of fiberglass materials. These fountains generally have a "stone-like" finish that makes them look like real, natural stone fountains.

The largest advantage of a fiberglass outdoor fountain is its weight. Being of fiberglass material, your garden fountain will have a manageable weight, thus making it easier to maneuver, move and clean. Many of the fiberglass tiered fountains have a spin lock system so the pieces can come apart for easy storage in cold months and easy cleaning.

Another advantage of fiberglass garden fountains is that they are lighter to ship thus keeping the cost down. One disadvantage is that they could fade or chip over time from the sun and elements.

Typically, stone or granite garden fountains are actually cast stone as opposed to solid concrete or granite to keep the weight down. The biggest advantage of a cast stone garden fountain is its beauty and strength. Obviously, cast stone is heavy so pick a permanent place for it in your yard. They can be moved but it will take some time and energy to do so.
