What goes on in a Christian funeral service? Usually, the Christian funeral service is not a somber occasion but is focused on the commemoration of the life lived by the deceased. Moreover, a Christian funeral service wishes to give a message of assurance to those left behind that the deceased is finally in paradise with the Almighty.

Individuals who belong to the Christian faith believe in Jesus Christ's second coming. Christians also believe that the works that they have accomplished in the world will be evaluated at the time of their demise. They believe that it is through their good acts that they will be worthy of staying with God in his kingdom. Christians try to live out the teachings of Christ in their day to day lives.

Christian funeral service for any devout Christian means a celebration of the soul's eternal journey to the life after death. It is because of this precise reason that such services are very spirited, as they strongly assert the belief that the deceased has found an eternal abode in the House of the Lord.

Christians believe death to be an entry into the world of eternal bliss and exit from this cycle of pain and suffering. That the soul is enjoying the bliss of heaven and is residing with the Lord Himself is a comforting thought that lessens the extremity of the trauma that death brings to the family members. The Christian funeral ceremony is conducted accordingly with the same belief.

Generally, a Christian funeral ceremony is organized by the pastor. They are usually conducted at the church which the deceased used to visit during his or her lifetime. Though the service does not have a casket generally, but when it is being conducted in a funeral home, casket is generally present. Usually, Christian funeral service does not have the custom of displaying the body of the deceased person.

The rituals in such a funeral service are similar to a memorial, in which religious songs and similar prayers are sung and lines from Holy Scriptures are read out. A short message is delivered by the priest, after which a mass prayer is held.

Then the attendees partake in the grief of the family as well as close friends and tell about their personal experiences as to how the deceased has touched their lives and created a permanent impression in their minds. Some people also opt for doing a slideshow of photos of the deceased or play a recorded video from the life of the deceased.

The ceremony eventually ends with a short fellowship reception at the church, where food is served. A graveside service is generally not included, though some Christian communities opt for that too.
